SNP CRITICISE FOREIGN SECRETARY’S “EXTRAORDINARY LEVELS OF CONFUSION AND CONTRADICTION”
BORIS JOHNSON "MUST CLARIFY WHICH MASK HE WEARS" AS HE MEETS EU COUNTERPARTS
The SNP have today criticised the Foreign Secretary for his ‘extraordinary levels of confusion and contradiction’ following his competing stances on the UK’s full participation in the Single Market and Turkey’s accession to the EU.
Alex Salmond MP has called on Boris Johnson to provide answers during an exchange at Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs questions in the Commons, on whether he campaigned for Turkey’s accession to the EU as a reason to get the UK out or whether he campaigned to pull the UK out in order to support Turkey’s accession.
The SNP MP also brought to the Foreign Secretary’s attention an article written by Mr Johnson, written immediately after the referendum, which argues for the UK’s full participation in the Single Market and why therefore the Government is attempting to stop the same issue being brought to a vote in the House of Commons.
Alex Salmond MP, SNP spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, commented:
“It’s self-evident that the Foreign Secretary sees the future of the UK economy purely from the vantage point of his own career. Previously he campaigned for the UK to leave the European Union based on his opposition to Turkey joining, yet now he trumpets the Turks with his support for them joining the EU. And another article calling for the UK’s full participation in the Single Market immediately after the referendum is now contradicted by the Government’s opposition to allowing MPs to have a vote on the same matter.
“It is important for the House and for the public to know which of the masks the two-faced Foreign Secretary puts on when he meets with his EU counterparts. Bumbling Boris has displayed extraordinary levels of confusion and contradiction over the UK’s access to the Single Market.
“However the joke is no longer just about Boris. His political gymnastics are now clowning around with the jobs and livelihoods of millions of people.”
