ALEX SALMOND: NEW FLIGHT PATHS BRING MORE GOOD NEWS FOR ABERDEEN AIRPORT
MP for Gordon, Alex Salmond, has responded to the Flybe announcement of new routes between Aberdeen and London Heathrow, calling the move a "positive step" in the right direction.
The announcement, which marks the first time the regional airline will serve London Heathrow, included the introduction of similar routes from Edinburgh.
The routes will become active from March 2017, with three flights between Aberdeen Airport and Heathrow on weekdays, with a total of 40 per week from Aberdeen and Edinburgh combined.
Earlier this month, Aberdeen Airport management announced that a decline in passenger numbers had slowed, marking a "cautiously optimistic" end to the year.
Commenting on the announcement, Mr Salmond said:
"After what has been a year of multiple challenges for Aberdeen Airport, Flybe's announcement of even more routes to Heathrow is a positive step in the right direction for the North East's air-hub.
"The additional routes will mean that more people from Aberdeen and the surrounding areas will have more access to the international connections at Heathrow, with the same to be said for those travelling from Edinburgh.
"I am greatly encouraged to see that Aberdeen Airport will now be better connected both in the air and on the ground, with the new AWPR improvements already in operation there."
