SALMOND CALLS ON PRIME MINISTER TO INCLUDE SCOTTISH FISHERIES MINISTER IN EU PRESIDENCY
SNP Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Alex Salmond, has called on the Prime Minister to agree to the new Scottish Fisheries Minister chairing or co-chairing the Fisheries Council next year during the UK Presidency of Europe.
Alex Salmond MP said:
"There is understandable scepticism among coastal communities about the disastrous Common Fisheries Policy.
"Fisheries Policy and the refusal of successive Westminster Governments to give Scottish fishing any degree of priority. Indeed back in the 1970s on entry into Europe Westminster civil servants described Scottish fishing as 'expendable'.
"However, the UK Presidency of next year offers the opportunity to press the reset buttons. If a Scottish Government Minister was to chair or co-chair the Council next year then the chance would be there to redesign the CFP regulations to make them workable by Scottish fishermen. That would be of great practical help to Scotland.
"Scotland commands 60 per cent of fisheries landings across the UK. It is time for Westminster Government to give it the priority it requires.
"I challenge the Prime Minister to make good his claim that Scotland is an equal partner in the United Kingdom and by this simple commitment offer hope and practical help to Scottish fishing communities".
