MP for Gordon, Alex Salmond, has issued his congratulations to Garioch Sports Club, after the local community-run organisation received a national award for their athletics provision for young people.

At an awards ceremony held at Chessington World of Adventures, the Garioch Sports Centre Junior Running Club was named  “Best Local Activity for five to twelve year olds” in the UK.

The club, which was established in 2015 has received support from international athletes including Olympic swimmer Hannah Miley, Scottish Champion runner Myles Edwards and Team GB runner Hannah England.

The 2016 edition of the annual 'What’s on 4 Little Ones' award, supported by The Children’s Activities Association was decided after over 112,000 votes were cast.

Mr Salmond said:

"It gives me great pride to see that the Garioch Sports Centre's fine work with young people in our community being recognised as the best in the nation.

"The centre's tireless work has had a hugely positive impact on the region, and has provided an excellent outlet for our young people to lead healthy, active lifestyles and have fun.

"I must add that I am not surprised to learn of their award. I regularly hear about their many victories in events across the North East and I have no doubt that the organisers, mini-athletes and helpers alike will keep on running, bringing many more successes to our community along the way."
