A statement concerning the events which took place at Westminster

I arrived on the scene with Lady Sylvia Herman MP shortly after the terrorist was shot. Sylvia as a trained first-aider offered help but this was already in hand.

The Commons staff were calm and magnificent at all times throughout the 5 hours that the emergency lasted and no MP was ever in any real danger thanks to the prompt action of the security officers.

My heart goes out to all of the innocent victims of this assault on democracy, particularly to the family of PC Keith Palmer who fell in the line of his duty.

I do not know of a single politician who does not fully appreciate the selfless work of those who risk themselves to keep us safe from harm as we conduct our democratic responsibility.

Our duty is to get on with it.

Alex Salmond MP
