ALEX SALMOND: “WE WOULD SEEK TO CREATE THE EU IF IT DID NOT ALREADY EXIST"

FORMER FIRST MINISTER ADDRESSES FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE ON BENEFITS OF EU MEMBERSHIP

Alex Salmond MP has set out the benefits of Scotland and the UK remaining part of the EU while addressing the UK Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee today.

The SNP's Foreign Affairs spokesperson was providing evidence to the committee as a former First Minister of Scotland.

Commenting, Alex Salmond MP said:

“If the EU didn't already exist, we would be seeking to create it. The benefits are wide and far reaching- not least for trade and economic cooperation.
"It's a myth that sharing sovereignty is incompatible with sovereignty - taking Ireland as an example - EU membership can provide more sovereignty.
"Former Uachtarán na hÉireann, Mary Robinson once described Ireland as ‘an island behind an island’ before it joined it European Economic Community in 1973. Arguing that by joining European community, Ireland actually increased their own independence and place on the world stage. Which is the type of positive message lacking from both sides of main campaigns so far.
"We have seen a depressing campaign so far from the Prime Minister. What is unfolding before our eyes has alarming similarities to the fear-mongering Better Together campaign from the Scottish referendum.
“We need to fight an entirely different campaign in Scotland. What people want to hear is how to build a European future which acts on the environment, which faces down the multi-nationals, which shows solidarity when faced with a refugee crisis, which acts together against austerity, which respects its component nations, which co-operates on great projects like a super grid across the North Sea and which revitalises the concept of a social Europe for all of our citizens."
